MDC RECEIVES ENGINEERING AWARDS

 FOR TOWER AVENUE, HARTFORD, PROJECT

HARTFORD – The Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) has received two awards from the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers in recognition of the Tower Brook Conduit Extension project.  The MDC was awarded the Achievement in Civil Engineering Award for the project in the Water Resources category and an Award of Merit in the Construction category.

The Society presented these awards to honor the design and construction achievement of Civil Engineers on projects that demonstrated significant engineering expertise or innovation. Award categories included: Water Resources/Environmental, Structural, Transportation, Geotechnical and Construction.  This was the first year that Society has issued these awards.  Approximately 175 people from the engineering, municipal and construction industries attended the May 5th awards ceremony at the Aqua-Turf in Southington.

The MDC applied for these awards with the consulting engineering firm CDM of Wethersfield and Paganelli Construction of Suffield (for the Construction Award).

The $7.5 million Tower Brook Storm Sewer project was a joint venture between the City of Hartford and the MDC, with funding provided by the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection’s Clean Water Fund.

The project consisted of the installation of about 6,000 feet of storm drain pipes ranging from 24 inches to 72 inches in diameter, and included jacking a 72-inch reinforced concrete pipe under active railroad tracks. In addition, 700 feet of new, separated sewer drains were installed.  The Tower Avenue project highlights the complexity of engineering, and construction, of infrastructure in city streets, especially because of the number and closeness of utility, as well as rail line, crossings.

As a result of the project, Tower Brook has been re-directed from the sewer system to the Connecticut River which reduced drainage flows to the Hartford Water Pollution Control Facility. The project has reduced the amount of untreated sewage overflows from combined sewer  into the Connecticut River by an estimated 2 million gallons during severe rains to protect public health and the environment. The project also has improved drainage control at locations that were susceptible to flooding during heavy rains

The MDC is a nonprofit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929. The MDC provides water, sewer and household hazardous waste collection services to its member municipalities: Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor. In addition, under a series of special agreements, the District supplies treated water to Glastonbury, the southern portion of South Windsor, the eastern portion of Farmington, East Granby and Unionville.

The MDC’s Clean Water Project includes reduction of combined sewer overflows with the Hartford Central Sewer System, and elimination of sanitary sewer overflows in the sanitary sewers of Wethersfield, West Hartford, Windsor, Rocky Hill and Newington, and reduction of nitrogen discharging to Long Island Sound.
