MDC TO HOST WETHERSFIELD COVE “SOURCE TO SEA” CLEANUP

HARTFORD — For the 9^th consecutive year, Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) volunteers, working alongside Hartford County residents, will lead cleanup activities at Wethersfield Cove on October 3, 2009 as part of the 13^th annual Connecticut River Watershed Source to Sea Cleanup.  This one-day community cleanup of the Connecticut River and its tributaries is a four-state event coordinated by the Connecticut River Watershed Council (CRWC), a non-profit advocacy organization working to conserve and protect water quality, habitat, and recreational access across the entire Connecticut River Watershed.

The MDC cleanup crew and local volunteers will begin work at 8:00 a.m. at the Wethersfield Cove in Wethersfield.  To participate in the event, contact Melissa Muszynski, MDC Communications at 860-278-7850, ext. 3221, or the Connecticut River Watershed Council at cleanup@ctriver.org or 413-772-2020, ext. 201.  As a volunteer, you will be joined that day by thousands of other volunteers throughout Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont working to clean up the watershed.

Christine Luis-Schultz, CRWC’s Outreach Director and Cleanup organizer, explained, “Last year’s volunteers hauled 50 tons of trash from 61 locations along streams and rivers in four states.  We had over 2,000 participants, and this year we hope to have even more.  The Cleanup is a great way to take care of your community and your favorite river.” 

The MDC is a nonprofit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1929. The MDC provides water, sewer and household hazardous waste collection services to its member municipalities: Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor. In addition, under a series of special agreements, the District supplies treated water to Glastonbury, the southern portion of South Windsor, the eastern portion of Farmington, East Granby and Unionville.
