Inflow and Infiltration

Inflow and Infiltration Removal

As part of the Clean Water Project, the Inflow and Infiltration Sanitary Sewer Overflow pilot studies are a major component that will reduce the inflow and infiltration of stormwater entering the sanitary sewer system, helping prevent overflows and backups. The work will consist of sewer pipe lining, sewer lateral rehabilitation and lining as well as disconnecting private property stormwater connections from the sewer system.

The sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) pilot studies are located in Windsor, Newington, West Hartford and Wethersfield in addition to other sewer rehabilitation projects in various locations throughout the member towns. The project areas were identified as having historical problems with inflow and infiltration.

The studies quantify the efficiency of inflow and infiltration removal technologies and track the reduction of inflow and infiltration flows after rehabilitation. With the completion of the studies, the MDC will re-assess the sanitary sewer hydraulic models and make recommendations for potential modifications to each of the SSO Elimination plans and the CSO Long-Term Control Plan (LTCP), if necessary to optimize the inflow and infiltration removal techniques utilized.
